Title: New Product Information for HIPPI (MR March 22, 1994)
I. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
IRIS HIPPI is a network interface controller (board and software) providing
High-speed Parallel Processing Interface (HIPPI) connectivity for Silicon
Graphics CHALLENGE and Onyx servers and supercomputers.
IRIS HIPPI can be installed onto the following platforms: CHALLENGE L,
CHALLENGE XL, Onyx Deskside, and Onyx Rackmount. Each IRIS HIPPI board
provides a destination (reception) channel and a source (transmit) channel.
The IRIS HIPPI board interfaces to the operating system through the IBus.
The IRIS HIPPI product requires one FCI connection on any FMezz board, and one
VMEbus slot. Multiple IRIS HIPPI boards can be installed; the exact number
depends on the platform.
II. DEPENDENCIES/COMPATIBILITY INFORMATION
1. Requires IRIX 5.2 MR.
2. Power requirements for this board are 75 watts versus typical VMEBus
board usage of around 40 watts. When configuring systems with IRIS HIPPI,
take care to verify that the total VMEBus power requirements do not
exceed the power available on that system.
Also, per the release notes, at 12 volts, the IRIS HIPPI board uses a
maximum of 1.5 amps, not 2 amps as stated in the documentation.
3. Approximately 30 flat internal HIPPI cables were shipped to beta sites.
These will be swapped out along with older beta boards. Note that the flat
cables had some failures associated with them.
III. PRODUCT NUMBERS (Marketing Codes)
The marketing code for HIPPI is CC8-HIPPI-1.0.
Note: External HIPPI cables must be ordered from third-party vendors.
from the on-line "relnotes HIPPI 1":
1.4 Obtaining_HIPPI_Cables
HIPPI cables are not shipped with IRIS HIPPI; however, they
are absolutely necessary for the IRIS HIPPI product to
function, and the short length cables are very useful for
troubleshooting. Each customer site is responsible for
having the necessary cables for the installation. Each IRIS
HIPPI installation requires two standard HIPPI cables that
are long enough to reach the switch or other HIPPI endpoint
with which the SGI system will be connected.
HIPPI cables can be purchased in a variety of lengths (for
example, 5, 10, and 25 meters). Some vendors carry a 6-inch
female-to-female cable that can be used to join two standard
HIPPI cables into one loopback cable. Silicon Graphics is
currently using the vendors listed below.

IV. TRAINING PLAN
1. The CSD March 1994 monthly video demonstrates the installation of a
HIPPI board and contains other HIPPI information.
2. There is HIPPI QNA available, see the HIPPI.qna file
3. HIPPI needs to be incorporated into future SSE trainings.
V. DOCUMENTATION
1. Relnotes are available on the HIPPI 1.0 CD only. There are no
hardcopy relnotes for this product.
2. User documentation:
These three documents ship with the HIPPI board.
*IRIS HIPPI Installation Instructions Document Number 108-0106-001
IRIS HIPPI Administration Guide Document Number 007-2229-001
IRIS HIPPI API Programmer's Guide Document Number 007-2227-001
*This document comes sealed in an envelope with a label
that states it is NOT to be opened by the end customer.
The P/N for the package is 013-0973-001, which includes
Installation Instructions 108-0106-001, label and envelope.
3. At this time no spec sheets or white papers are available.
VI. Technical support delivery issues (Complexity of support expected)
1. We anticipate 75% of all HIPPI board installs will be performed by SSEs.
Self-installs will be done by people who have completed the Onyx
maintenance course and by third-party support vendors.
2. Initially we expect to see install questions, and bad board problems.
Later we anticipate networking problems and interoperability issues.
3. What area of expertise is expected to answer questions on this product?
Communications and Hardware
4. Are there specific materials needed to provide support (hdw, manuals,
etc...)
See the documentation listed above.
As CSE continues to collect information on this product the QNA will
contain the latest information.
For hardware support, SSEs and support providers may want to carry
loopback and null cables, as explained in the cable FYI referenced above.
5. Are third parties involved?
Switch and cable vendors.
a) How does third party interaction affect the type of support we provide?
We will be working directly with switch vendors when issues occur.
b) Will third parties provide SGI with support if needed?
Consulting will be provided by third parties.
An example of consulting on this product would be software drivers.
6. Lab testing requirements
Minimally, a board and a loopback cable.
7. What type of support questions are expected?
The QNA is our best effort to anticipate questions.
8. Expertise of customer expected?
The HIPPI beta customers were extremely HIPPI-literate, so we lack
information regarding the types of problems first-time users will
encounter.
Also HIPPI documentation is geared at a system administrator familiar with
HIPPI. Marketing determined this was an appropriate level for
documentation. If this initial evaluation does not accurately reflect the
customer base, the documentation will be upgraded with the second release
of the software. If you find that a high percentage of your HIPPI calls
are from naive users, please e-mail cotto@sgi.com with summaries of your
customer problems.
9. Support `policy'- how far do we recommend going to answer questions
related to this product?
We recommend drawing the line at consulting, which will have to be
determined on a case by case basis.
VII. MARKETING INFORMATION
1. How many boards are expected to ship?
We are expecting 40 HIPPI boards to ship each quarter, BUT in the
March/April time frame we are shipping over 100 (the backlog).
Note: Some sites will receive multiple boards.
2. Marketing positioning
HIPPI can be used by anyone who needs extremely fast I/O connections.
It could be a post-production environment where large files are stored
on Challenges and/or Onyxs.
Or, it could be at sites that need faster disk performance than
they get from SCSI, and they could connect via HIPPI to disk arrays.
HIPPI might also be used at sites that need very fast throughput
on networks using TCP/IP.
a) Are there materials available? (data sheet, presentations, etc...)
At this time materials are not available.
3. Who is the product marketing manager for this product?
Lise Garrett
